I’m excited to say that I’ll be conducting a filmed interview with Dr. Calvin Morris next month for my documentary, Shielded Brutality. Dr. Morris has been an outspoken advocate for justice regarding victims of Chicago Police torture.
Dr. Calvin Morris
Dr. Morris has a towering biography as a historian, Reverend, and lifelong activist/organizer on the front lines of civil rights and social justice issues. He worked with Rev. Jesse Jackson in the late 60’s and early 70’s for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s Operation Breadbasket (now Rainbow PUSH). After Dr. King’s death, Dr. Morris continued his work with the SCLC, working with Coretta Scott King in Atlanta for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Non-Violent Social Change. Since 1998, Dr. Morris has been the Executive Director of the Chicago-based Community Renewal Society, an organization that works for social and economic justice through journalism, education, and community organizing.
I’m sure Dr. Morris’s insights will be a huge asset to this documentary. I have another reason for being excited to meet him, though, that has little to do with my documentary. One of my favorite jazz albums is Cannonball Adderly’s Country Preacher - Live from Operation Breadbasket. I look forward to asking Dr. Morris what he remembers from this concert!
I’ll be sure to post a couple brief clips of the interview next month.
